My main areas of research are in metaphysics and the philosophy of religion. I am writing a book on the persistence of material objects and persons, and papers on temporal
passage and the idea that God is "outside of time". I worry a lot about causation and laws of nature, and wonder whether nomic necessity might be necessity in the strongest
sense (as Sydney Shoemaker contends). I am co-organizer (with Tamar Gendler of Syracuse University) of an annual summer workshop, "Metaphysical Mayhem", which I started at the University of Notre Dame in 1996.
