 ellow of the British Academy and Distinguished Professor of Comparative Phi
 losophy and Religion at Lancaster University. He has written over fifty pap
 ers on a variety of topics, and seven books so far.&nbsp;<em style="font-fa
 mily: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">Human Self, Divine Self: The P
 hilosophy of Being in Two Gītā Commentaries</em>&nbsp;(2014) won the Best B
 ook 2011-2015 Prize of the Society for Hindu Christian Studies, while his m
 ost recent book is&nbsp;<em style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-s
 ize: 11pt;">Human Being, Bodily Being. Phenomenology from Classical India</
 em>&nbsp;(2018). He is currently developing a philosophical account of emot

 rspective of the comparative philosophy of religion, it is intriguing that 
 there are those who argue that a true commitment to the authority of sacred
  text requires the rejection of a divine author for it. But such is the pos
 ition of the Mīmāṃsā thinkers, the Exegetes of the Hindu sacred texts, the 
 Vedas. In this talk, we look at several precise arguments against ‘God’ (<e
 m>īśvara</em>) by Kumārila Bhaṭṭa (7<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;c), arguments that s
 ometimes prefigure atheist ones in Christian Europe a thousand years later,
  and sometimes are wholly novel to his context. After laying out these indi
 vidual arguments, we will leave time to open up discussion about both what 
 the concept of God is that is involved here, and what possible responses th
 ere might be for a theist.</p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; color: #4e4e4
