A Look at the Philosophy of Mary Shepherd
Martha Bolton

Shepherd is an early nineteenth century philosopher who was well known and highly respected during her lifetime whose work has recently been the subject of increasing attention.  She is an acute opponent of Hume, critical of his basic theory of mind and his use of it to derive accounts of the relation of cause and effect, and origin and content of belief in the external world.  She advocates an original theory of mind which supports anti-Humean theories of the relation of cause  and effect, and the origin, content, and justification of belief in the external world.  In my talk, I say something about Shepherd’s life but talk mostly about  her main claims and arguments and raise some questions about them.
