Climate for Women and Underrepresented Groups at Rutgers
|
The Rutgers Department of Philosophy believes that a crucial part of supporting and maintaining a thriving department climate for women and underrepresented groups in philosophy is making information and resources accessible to current and prospective students, and that an important part of creating and developing an excellent professional philosophical climate for all philosophers is making information on implicit bias and stereotype threat, how to counteract them, and departmental and professional statistics more publicly accessible. In this spirit, the reader will find here information relevant to those who are current or prospective members of Rutgers’ philosophical community, as well as the broader philosophical community. |

October 11, 2102 Climate Workshop: |
Professor Susan Marine (Merrimack College School of Education) co-facilitated a workshop with our own Andy Egan on best practices for being an "ally." This event was an in-depth session that focused on generating discussion among faculty and students and building strategies for being supportive allies to members of underrepresented groups in the department, and in the profession more generally. The workshop targeted both how individuals can be allies and how the Rutgers department can serve the profession on these issues. It consisted of three sessions---first a general session with both faculty and students in which we discussed data from the recent graduate student climate survey, and then a session for faculty only followed by a session for students only. Dr. Marine then composed a report of all three sessions that will help to inform the Climate Committee as we plan future projects and events. |

October 13, 2011 Women-in-Philosophy Community Dinner |
This event, held annually, is open to all philosophy majors, but especially women interested in majoring in philosophy and going on to graduate school in philosophy. We created it in order to provide undergraduates with the opportunity to meet and talk with women graduate students and faculty in a relaxed setting, and to gain more information about what it’s like to be a woman in philosophy.
Here is a quote from an attendee of this year’s dinner: "The women-in-philosophy dinner was great! I had lots of fun and the food was amazing. It gave me an opportunity to speak to renowned professors and ask them questions about what it is like to have a career in philosophy. I would have never been able to speak to any of these professors one-on-one if it wasn't for the dinner. At the women-in-philosophy dinner I was also able to meet and get feedback from other young ladies who are my age but have more experience than me in this field. Attending the dinner reassured me that continuing my studies in philosophy is the right choice for me." ~Lizmairy Manana, Class of 2015 |

July 20, 2011 Open Letter to the Pluralist Guide to Philosophy Programs |
Several female Rutgers Philosophy grad students sent an open letter to the PluralistGuide.org, expressing their disagreement with the Guide’s methodology of their report on the climate for women in philosophy at various departments and their assessment of the Rutgers Department of Philosophy as one of only three departments categorized as “Needs Improvement”. You can read the letter below, or at the Pluralist Guide or Leiter Reports. There was also a discussion of the Guide’s assessment and the letter at Feminist Philosophers and on Leiter Reports.

Open Letter from Female Graduate Students at Rutgers Regarding the SPEP/SAAP Guide's Section on Climate for Women
We, female graduate students at Rutgers, were surprised and disappointed to see Rutgers singled out in your assessment of department climates for women as one of only four philosophy departments initially classified as “Need Improvement”, and one of only three remaining on the list. While every department has room for improvement--for example we would love to see a higher percentage of female faculty--we think that this special treatment is unwarranted. |
